The Running Athlete: Assessment, Retraining & Rehab


Physiotherapists are routinely involved in the treatment of athletes involved in running and running- related sports. These patients typically present to sports medicine practices and private practices throughout the country. In addition, rehabilitation facilities as well as outpatient clinics will be exposed to these running athletes. A comprehensive understanding of running will be of great benefit to all physiotherapists and other health practitioners involved in the treatment of running athletes. This course will be of benefit to the newly graduated physiotherapist through to the experienced practitioner that is routinely involved in the management of running athletes.
During the course, participants will be expected to understand motor recruitment in running During the course, participants will be expected to understand functional strength for running At the completion of this course, participants should be able to understand specific running injuries and clinical applications (e.g Hamstring tendinopathy, Achilles tendinopathy, patellofemoral pain) At the completion of this course, participants should be able to understand running biomechanical principles and faulty movement patterns (e.g. cross-over, over-stride) During the course, participants will be expected to understand footwear and implications At the completion of the course, participants should be able to understand running technique/efficiency and implications of gait changes At the end of the course, participants should be able to understand implications of gait retraining and loading changes At the completion of the course, participants should be able to understand injury background/risk and associated factors During the course, participants will be expected to implement an effective clinical assessment of the injured runner At the completion of the course, participants should be able to understand running programming (e.g. training planning including recovery)
