Sports Physiotherapy Level 1


This course will explore the theoretical and practical sides of managing sporting injuries with an emphasis on current research. Presented topics include shoulder, ankle and knee injuries with focus specifically on ligament, tendon and muscle. Participants will also gain information on acute onfield management and travelling with a sports team, as well as a large practical component on taping techniques. This course is a mandatory part of the experiential titling pathway in Sports Physiotherapy.
At the completion of this course, you should be able to: • Demonstrate an ability to assess, diagnose and formulate an appropriate acute treatment plan for injuries of the ankle • Demonstrate an ability to assess, diagnose and formulate an appropriate acute treatment plan for injuries of the knee • Apply knowledge of functional anatomy and biomechanics of the upper limb to the assessment, diagnosis and acute management of shoulder injuries • Demonstrate knowledge and practical skills to assess and manage on-field injuries, and specifically demonstrate knowledge of an effective examination and treatment of injuries to the spine in the sporting arena • Identify the injury prevention, assessment, management and rehabilitation roles of sports physiotherapist in a team situation • Outline the medical team structure for a sporting team and identify the role of the sports physiotherapist • Recognise the implications of the sports coverage with respect to risk management, physiotherapy registration, insurance and remuneration • Show proficiency at strapping techniques for the athlete • Give information regarding specific case presentations by the following: o make a provisional diagnosis o outline differential diagnosis o describe tests used to confirm diagnosis o formulate acute injury management plan • List important factors to consider when assessing non-traumatic injuries  Demonstrate knowledge of the physiological and time processes of inflammation and healing of tendon, ligament and muscle tissue
