Soft Tissue Massage for Older People

Practical workshop designed specifically for practitioners working with older patients. The course will cover topics such as: practitioner safety including correct postures: hand positions and table heights; common practitioner injuries, their symptoms and how to avoid them; the advantages and disadvantages of different lubricants. It will also include the demonstration of a variety of commonly used soft tissue techniques focusing on the intent, application, considerations and benefits of each technique with several case studies. Participants will have the opportunity to practice each technique and revise their surface anatomy and palpation skills. The workshop will also summarise current research on the topic
Demonstrate the ability to safely and efficiently perform a variety of soft tissue massage techniques and massage sequences appropriate to an aging population Recognise and conform to efficient postures and principles to ensure practitioner safety while performing soft tissue massage techniques Develop the participants palpation skills Understand the advantages and disadvantages of each soft tissue massage technique Know the signs and symptoms of common practitioner injuries and principles of how to avoid them Practice correct draping methods while performing soft tissue massage techniques Understand the different lubricants commonly used When providing soft tissue massage Know how some soft tissue techniques must be adapted to suit an aging patient Reflect on the surface anatomy essential for successful application of soft tissue techniques Recognise the importance of skin integrity when massaging an elderly patient
