Physiotherapy Management of People With Parkinson's Disease
Physiotherapists working in aged care frequently have to manage people with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and other movement disorders. This course will improve skills relevant to the assessment and treatment of these disorders. It will cover recent research findings, new medication and other changes in PD management e.g. surgery and their implications for physiotherapy practice.
At the completion of this course, you should: • have good knowledge of current research findings on: o The pathophysiology of PD o Current medical management approaches, o The latest PD medication and how they work o The research behind strategy training • know the characteristic features of PD and be able to differentiate this with other related movement disorders • be able to describe the impact of PD medication and other movement facilitation strategies • be able to identify common outcome measures relevant to PD and implement them • develop and implement strategies for a variety of PD, and other movement problems identified in case presentations • Know how to monitor patients response to their PD medication • Understand the physiotherapist’s role in relating this information to the treating medical practitioner
