Course: Integrated Solutions for Neck and Head Pain

This course is appropriate for qualified physiotherapists only*

This course is an opportunity to enhance your skills in managing complex neck pain disorders that are often associated with headache, jaw pain, and dizziness.

The aims of this course are twofold. Firstly, it will draw on knowledge from research, applied anatomy, and clinical expertise, to enhance your knowledge of the unique characteristics of the cervical vertebral column and cervical musculature, in states of health and impairment; this underpins a systematic approach to the assessment and rehabilitation of cervical movement disorders. A particular focus will be on the role of the posterior/anterior cervical, and axioscapular musculature in these movement disorders. Secondly the course will utilise this framework in the context of common clinical presentations (that often includes confounding symptoms such as headache, jaw pain, and dizziness) to direct appropriate and effective interventions. The course will be focused on a structured management approach appropriate for all problematic cervical disorders including whiplash associated disorders.

While managing chronic neck pain often requires a multi-factorial approach, one particular challenge is in the early identification of key movement impairments and functional deficits that underlie the patient’s disorder. These can often be addressed with exercise and manual therapy. With regard to exercise, the key to successful exercise prescription is to provide specific but simple exercise that is manageable for the patient, and is adequately progressed. Commonly we prescribe exercise programs that are not specific enough and are not adequately progressed to meet the patients’ individual needs. Additionally, programs often contain too many exercises which can aggravate symptoms and compromise adherence and therefore success.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Improve biomechanical and pathophysiological knowledge underpinning clinical reasoning in the management of neck pain

  2. Draw a link between the patients postural and movement behaviours and their reported symptoms.

  3. Advance skills in the examination and training of specific muscle groups of the cervical spine and shoulder girdle.

  4. Advance clinical reasoning in the management of neck and jaw pain, headache, dizziness, and whiplash.
